Voluntary Protection Plans

Voluntary protection plans are designed to help offset the cost of unexpected expenses related to accidents, critical illness and hospital stays.

  • The plans help you cover deductibles, out-of-pocket maximums, travel and other costs related to unexpected medical expenses.
  • As an added benefit, protection plans include a wellness benefit that may put money in your pocket.
  • You and your covered spouse can each earn a wellness benefit of $75 when you are enrolled in the accident and hospital protection plans and complete screenings like blood tests, colonoscopies or stress tests. The wellness benefit for the critical illness protection plan is also $75, but it covers you, your covered spouse and child.

Accident Protection

Accidents happen. A fall can result in a concussion, broken bone or worse. These injuries can be costly in terms of medical care, loss of work time and other related expenses.

The accident protection plan can help cover expenses for initial care, surgery, transportation and lodging, and follow-up care resulting from an accident.

Enrollment & Claims

Benefit Assist Program

If you’re covered by a company medical plan, UHC’s Benefit Assist Program will contact you and get your claim started when you receive covered services or are diagnosed with an illness that is eligible for reimbursement.

Benefit Assist will also start the claim process for the wellness screening benefits, if the claim is processed by UnitedHealthcare. If you’re not covered by UHC, you will need to submit your claims via phone.

Enrollment

Enrollment is voluntary but must be made within 31 days of hire or of a qualified family status change. After the 31 days, your next opportunity to enroll will be during annual enrollment.

You can enroll yourself, your spouse and/or your children but a dependent will not be eligible for dependent insurance if the dependent is eligible for insurance under the policy as an employee.

Each plan will have required after-tax premiums that you pay weekly via payroll deduction. Premiums are based on what tier of coverage you choose.
