Additional Insurance

Kiewit offers additional insurance policies designed to protect you and your family from financial hardship in the event of a catastrophic illness, accident or death, or even if you just need to take some time off work for a medical issue or maternity leave.  

Accidental Death & Dismemberment

Accident insurance helps protect you against losses due to accidents on or off the job. As a Kiewit employee, you are automatically covered by this additional insurance at no cost to you. 

  • The Kiewit protection policy covers employees in the amount of two times your annual base salary, up to $300,000.* 
  • The plan begins immediately on your first full day of employment. 



*The benefit amount will be reduced by 50% at age 65. 

Critical Illness

After a three-month waiting period, Kiewit employees are covered by a critical illness insurance policy to help pay costs associated with a major, life-altering illness.

  • The plan provides a tax-free lump-sum payment of $10,000 after a 30-day survival of one of 25 covered conditions. 
  • Covered conditions include cancer, heart attack, bypass surgery, stroke, dementia, coma and more.  
  • The payment will be made regardless of whether you’re able to work while you are ill or whether you make a full recovery. 
  • The insurance provider is Industrial Alliance Insurance and Financial Services Inc.  



Note: Project hires are not eligible for critical illness insurance.

Life Insurance

Kiewit offers life insurance coverage to provide financial protection for you and your family in the event of a death. 

  • Kiewit provides a protection policy for employees in the amount of two times your annual base salary, up to $300,000.* 
  • Staff employees are eligible for life insurance on their first day of employment.  
  • Kiewit also provides $10,000 for your eligible spouse and $5,000 for each eligible dependent child. 

In addition to the Kiewit provided protection policy, you have the option to purchase additional supplemental life insurance through payroll deduction for you, your eligible spouse and child(ren). See Optional Supplemental Life Insurance below for specific rates and coverage details.

Disability Coverage

Short-term Disability

This plan provides you with short-term income protection beginning on your first day of employment. The plan covers pregnancy and other short-term surgical or medical leaves that are non-work related. It is a taxable benefit. 

How it works: 

  • If approved, staff and project hires will have a seven-day elimination period for a sickness or injury that is not inpatient. 
  • Once the elimination period has been satisfied, the employee will be paid 100% (70% for project hires) of base salary and cost-of-living adjustments (COLA) through the first 13 weeks of an approved disability.  
  • The remaining 13 weeks of an approved disability are paid at 70% of base salary. 
  • After the sixth month, you may be eligible for the long-term disability plan, if approved. 
  • Disability earnings will be reduced by the amount of other income benefits you receive. 


Long-term Disability

This plan provides you with long-term income protection if your injury or illness continues for more than 180 days. It is a taxable benefit. 

How it works:  

  • The plan pays 60% of your salary, up to a maximum of $6,000 per month.  
  • The disability earnings will be reduced by the amount of other income benefits you receive. 
  • Once approved for the long-term disability plan, you are no longer considered an active employee.  
  • Extended health, dental and vision coverage will remain in effect for six months, and basic life and AD&D insurance coverage will continue through the duration of your approved LTD.  
  • All other benefits will end on the date LTD becomes effective.
