Disability

Kiewit’s financial protection plans include short-term and long-term disability. You also have the option to purchase additional income protection to supplement the Kiewit-provided plans. See below for more information.

Short-term Disability

This plan provides you with short-term income protection beginning on your first day of employment. The plan covers pregnancy and other short-term surgical or medical leaves that are non-work related. It is a taxable benefit.

How it works:

  • There is seven-day elimination period during which you use accrual sick carry-over or PTO. If no accrual is available, you’ll go without pay during this time.
  • Once the elimination period is over, you’ll be paid 100% of your salary and cost-of-living adjustments (COLA) through the third month.
  • For months four, five and six, you’ll be paid 70% of your salary and COLA.
  • After the sixth month, you may be eligible for the long-term disability plan, if approved.

Long-term Disability

This plan provides you with long-term income protection if your injury or illness continues for more than 180 days. It is a taxable benefit.

How it works:

  • The plan pays 60% of your salary, up to a maximum of $6,000 per month.
  • The disability earnings will be reduced by the amount of other income benefits you receive.
  • Once approved for the long-term disability plan, you are no longer considered an active employee.
  • Your medical, dental and vision coverage will remain in effect for six months and basic life insurance coverage will continue through the duration of your approved long-term disability.
  • All other benefits will end on the date long-term disability becomes effective.

Supplemental Income Protection

This plan can help protect a greater portion of your income than the long-term disability plan can alone. This tax-free benefit is offered to you within the first year of employment only and is a one-time only option. Information about this plan will be sent to employees when they become eligible.

  • This is a tax-free benefit plan to provide additional income replacement up to 75% of pre-disability base income, up to $13,500 per month.
  • Coverage payment is automatically deducted through payroll.
  • The plan is an individual policy; if you leave Kiewit, you may continue coverage.
